A former security van driver who ran off with a moneybag containing
RM250,000 was sentenced to 40 months' jail and ordered to be given two strokes
of the rotan yesterday. Abdul Jalil Abdullah, 38, who was arrested in an ambush
at a workshop in Kuala Rompin, Pahang, told the Sessions Court that he needed
the money as he owed money to loan sharks. Jalil and three other guards from
Safeguards Securicor Sdn Bhd, were on their rounds, collecting cash from banks,
when they stopped at Menara Perkeso in Jalan Ampang here, between 6pm and 7pm on
June 8. The three guards went in, leaving Jalil in the van. When they came out,
Jalil was no longer in the van, while one of the moneybags was missing. Jalil
was charged with committing criminal breach of trust amounting to RM250,000. He
was arrested on June 17 and police seized RM112,350. Sessions judge S.M. Komathy
Suppiah in her judgment said the public's perception of the security firm had
been affected due to Jalil's conduct. "A deterrent sentence must be imposed as
you committed the offence while on duty and still in uniform. "Your three other
colleagues were also remanded for four days because of your act." Jalil who was
unrepresented, hugged his sister and wept after the sentence was passed. Deputy
public prosecutor Mohd Hafiz Mohd Yusoff prosecuted.
